La Chaux-de-Fonds is the biggest district of Canton of Neuchâtel with a population of about 39'000. Its growth and prosperity is mainly bound up with the watch making industries and micro technology. Totally destroyed by a fire in 1794, the town was rebuilt following a grid street plan, which is still today original among Swiss cities. The famous architect, „Le Corbusier“, the sailor „Laurent Bourgnon“, the writer „Blaise Cendrars“, and the car maker „Louis Chevrolet“ were born there. It is renowned centre of European Art Nouveau. Since June 2009, La Chaux-de-Fonds and its neighbour Le Locle, have been awarded to UNESCO, for their special street plan, mixing private houses and watch factories.
